- Sugar alternatives for your favorite brew: sugar-free syrups, herbs and spices, cocoa powder, baking extracts, fruits, zero calorie sweetener options
- Lifeboost Coffee flavored selections: covering our process and flavored coffee options for decadent tastes without sugar or calories
Coffee has come a long way over the years.
Can you imagine hitching a ride with Doc Brown and Marty McFly today, travelling back to the 1950s, walking into a diner, and ordering a salted caramel cold brew or a skinny vanilla latte?
This surely would’ve topped the responses to McFly’s request for a Tab or Pepsi Free!
Today, many now view the traditional diner or cafe order of black coffee as more of a blank canvas, a base for additions far beyond cream and sugar.
But, what many are now realizing is these additions come with a price tag, one which can not only affect your wallet, but your waistline and your overall health.
So, in an effort to minimize added sugars and a seemingly ever-increasing calorie count, the demand for sugar free syrups seems to be on the rise.
However, when you research this trend, that’s when things can get a little confusing.
Some headlines speak of sugar-free syrups and other options as a rising trend, while others note some popular cafes, such as Starbucks, are actually limiting sugar-free options due to a lack of demand.
Hmmm, sounds like conflicting information…but is it really?
Perhaps the picture being painted here is clearer than it seems.
- Folks are looking for less sugary options (rise in demand for sugar-free)
- People are becoming more health conscious (could increase demand for sugar free, but could also mean folks are looking outside of conventional sugar free syrups, instead seeking natural alternatives)
- Some are shopping for sugar-free syrups for home use (increases overall demand for sugar-free syrups, but doesn’t reflect this same increase in cafes)
- Still others might be looking less frequently at cafe options (due to their reputation for sugary or less-than-natural menu selections)
What about you?
Have you sought out sugar-free alternatives in an effort to reduce your overall sugar intake?
If you’re looking for ways to flavor your coffee, to upgrade your brew from ordinary to extraordinary, but you don’t want to tip the sugar scale, there’s a world of flavorful, even healthy, items to choose from.
And, that’s where we’d like to focus our time today, looking at a variety of sugar-free flavor alternatives to boost your brew!

If you’re looking to cut sugar and calories, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice flavor.
Why?
Because there are so many ways to infuse flavor into your brew without added sugars.
Some of these methods involve no calorie sweeteners, others include pantry and baking staples which might even boost your body with added benefits as you sip.
So, sit back and sip on your favorite brew as we explore a variety of ways to flavor your cup of joe sans sugar!
1- Sugar-Free Syrups

This one’s a popular no-brainer, right?
Possibly the simplest way to mimic cafe menu options is to use sugar-free syrups in your coffee.
Many cafes offer such syrups, like sugar-free vanilla, sugar-free cinnamon dolce, sugar-free caramel, and much more.
Of course, cafes aren’t the only places you can find these additions, as you can purchase these at many grocery stores and online retailers for in-home use.
Most often, traditional sugar free syrups are made of water, zero calorie or artificial sweeteners, thickening agents, preservatives, and artificial flavorings.
If you’re searching for cleaner sugar-free syrups, be sure to look for the following:
- Monk fruit or stevia as the zero-calorie sweetener as opposed to aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, or acesulfame potassium.
- Natural flavor extracts such as essential oils and baking extracts as opposed to artificial flavors
- Some people are okay with using xanthan gum or cellulose gum in moderation, but these can cause digestive distress in certain individuals. If this is a concern for you, you can find both stevia and monk fruit flavored drops which can allow you to add sugar free sweetness and flavor to your drinks without added emulsifiers and thickening agents.
2- Herbs And Spices

There are many herbs and spices you can easily use to flavor your coffee.
There are also many ways to incorporate these as flavorings.
The following spices can add depth, warmth, texture, and flavor to your cup of joe:
- Cloves
- Cardamom
- Nutmeg
- Turmeric
Or, you can try these for a hint of natural sweetness:
- Star anise
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
If you love the taste florals bring to your cup, give these a try:
- Lavender
- Chamomile
- Jasmine
- Rose
- Hibiscus
Now, for a few ways to incorporate the above herbs, spices, and florals…
- You can add most ground herbs, spices, or even powdered florals to ground coffee in the filtered basket of a drip brewer. This infuses these flavors into your cup while brewing, providing not only flavor but a pleasing aroma.
Just be sure to add these ground additions to your filter in the basket, not to an electric system as this would clog brewing.
You can also add whole spices/herbs/florals, such as cinnamon sticks or dried lavender, in this same manner which can reduce sediment while still providing subtle flavor.
- For hot coffee, these additions (ground, powder, or whole) can also be added to your French press along with the ground coffee, infusing your brew as the hot water extracts those wonderful coffee flavors.
- If you’re a cold brew fan, you can add these items with your coarsely ground coffee to a cold brew maker or filter infuse the java slowly during the cold brewing process.
And, believe it or not, vanilla is also classified as a spice, but we’re giving vanilla bean pods, paste, and extract a category of their own as this flavor is a star in many beloved coffee creations.
The simplest way to infuse the fabulous flavor of vanilla into your coffee is to add pure (not imitation) vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste to your prepared cup (hot or cold).
*When using vanilla bean paste, you’ll simply add the same way you’d use extract teaspoon for teaspoon.
3- Cocoa Powder

Unsweetened cocoa powder is an excellent sugar-free, but flavorful, addition to any cup of coffee.
While this isn’t a spice, herb, or extract, it’s abundant in flavor and antioxidants (nice bonus, right?).
The slight bitterness of cocoa powder can even serve to enhance the naturally sweet notes in coffee.
Generally, you can add cocoa powder to hot coffee or espresso, then stir vigorously to combine.
It would be more difficult to combine cocoa powder to cold brew or iced coffee, only because it’s harder to incorporate, but it’s definitely workable.
Personally, I like to add cocoa powder to slightly warmed milk, which seems to help it incorporate more easily. Then, when added to cold brew or iced coffee, the inclusion is effortless.
4- Baking Extracts

Baking extracts are made by placing specific ingredients in alcohol which serves to steep the rich flavors out of such ingredients (like vanilla, lemon, orange, mint, etc) over time.
When cooking or baking with extracts, the remaining alcohol evaporates. But, when adding directly to coffee, while this component remains, it is incredibly small.
I think most can testify to these negligent amounts, should you have ever tried adding ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract to your brew.
And, in the case of mint, maple, almond extract, etc. if you’ve ever used these in a plain cup of coffee or a coffee recipe, then you likely know the amount added is generally ¼ teaspoon or less as these pack a potent amount of flavor.
In other words, while alcohol (such as vodka, rum, etc.) is the primary flavor extracting tool in these items, the amounts you’ll be using in your brew are negligent, negating any concerns.
Baking extracts are a simple and tasty way to infuse flavor into your brew without added sugar.
Since they’re very potent, you only need a small amount, and when combined with a zero-calorie sweetener, you’ve instantly infused both flavor and sweetness into your brew without a high sugar, high calorie price tag.
5- Fruits

Believe it or not, fruit tastes good in coffee!
Now, I will say these additions tend to taste best when paired with other items, but those items can all come right from your pantry, combining to yield an exceptionally tasty cup!
Most often you hear of fruit being used to make homemade syrups to use in your coffee, and you can certainly use zero calorie sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit (combined with water and fruit) to make a homemade sugar-free syrup.
However, you can also make this magic happen one cup at a time.
For instance, I’m a big fan of cinnamon and blueberry flavors in my coffee.
So, I love to make cold brew with Lifeboost Light Roast Coffee.
Then, I muddle 5-6 fresh blueberries combined with a few pinches of cinnamon and less than ⅛ teaspoon of monk fruit powder in the bottom of a glass.
Once those berries are essentially pulverized and fully combined with the monk fruit and cinnamon, I add about ¼ cup of either whole milk or unsweetened coconut milk, then I top it with cold brew.
Completely natural, 100% guilt free, and so good!
Of course, you can also do this with strawberries, raspberries, cocoa powder, vanilla, etc.
Feel free to get creative with the tastes you already enjoy and create a cup that hits the spot!
6- Zero Calorie Sweetener Options

If you’re avoiding sugar-free syrups, even products such as stevia or monk fruit flavored drops, searching for a cleaner, homemade, or more natural option, you can use pure monk fruit or stevia combined with the herbs, spices, extracts, oils, etc. listed above.
I routinely like to add about ⅛ teaspoon of pure vanilla extract with a pinch of real monk fruit for a sweetened vanilla coffee option.
Here, when using real monk fruit powder, a little goes a very long way, so you won’t need much at all to achieve that touch of sweetness many of us desire in our brew.
And, the addition of pure vanilla extract to this sweetener mimics a syrup or traditional flavoring agent without the chemicals, artificials, etc.
Here’s another option/example before we move on…
If you love a good peppermint mocha, you can add unsweetened cocoa powder, a pinch of real monk fruit powder, and a single drop of peppermint essential oil to your coffee with a splash of milk for a tasty treat.
**Be sure any essential oil you may use is safe for consumption prior to using in this manner, otherwise, opt for baking extracts.
Lifeboost Coffee Flavored Selections - Processes And Products

Here at Lifeboost, we love coffee!
But, we also love flavor infused coffee creations!
In fact, one look at the vast selection of flavored coffees on our website will tell you exactly how much we loved a decadently flavored brew.
However, unless you’re incorporating the tips listed in the section above, creating these tastes in your cup typically requires sugary additions and lots of calories.
And after all of those confectionery add-ins, the cup you’re left with is often anything but healthy.
This is where flavored coffees come in…
Infusing flavor into your cup before it ever reaches your doorstep is a great way to experience a decadent brew without additions of sugar, syrups, and other artificial additives.
This is why many folks love flavored coffees, but not all flavored selections are the same.
When it comes to conventional coffee flavoring methods, here’s some unfortunate insight into a few common practices:
- Oftentimes conventional coffee companies select old, stale coffee beans to use in their flavored selections. The added flavoring covers up the stale taste of the old beans, and the chemicals used in the flavoring process further extends the overall shelf-life of the product.
- It’s also a common practice for conventional coffee companies to use lower quality beans or a blend of beans in their flavored selections, again relying on the added chemical flavoring to cover up the poor tasting, low quality beans.
- When incorporating either of the two practices listed above, an added problem occurs. With low quality and/or stale coffee beans, added flavors don’t “stick” to the beans as easily because the beans aren’t as porous. This means an extra amount of chemical flavoring is used to ensure it adheres.
- Even worse, conventionally flavored coffee beans generally use propylene glycol to ensure the added artificial flavors “adhere” to the beans. If this chemical solvent sounds familiar, you may recognize it from the airline industry, as this is the same substance used to de-ice airplanes during inclement weather.
Frankly, there’s not even a fraction of these common practices that seem remotely appealing, let alone healthy, and that’s why we do things differently at Lifeboost.
We love coffee, and we love the way many flavors pair perfectly with this beloved bean.
But, we also care deeply about whole body health, and this is why we flavor Lifeboost coffee in the following, unconventional way:
- We start with freshly roasted coffee beans. Immediately after roasting, coffee beans are naturally more porous, so they can more easily absorb fragrances and flavors.
- During this prime window of time after roasting, we soak our coffee beans in real essential oils and/or natural baking extracts.
And, that’s it!
We never use old or stale beans.
We never use chemicals to flavor our coffee or to make the added, natural flavorings “stick.”
And, we never sacrifice quality, only using our specialty grade, single origin, sustainably grown, Arabica, medium roasted coffee for our flavored selections.
If you’re looking for added flavor without the added calories or sugar, give our flavored selections a try, you won’t be disappointed!
As we’ve seen today, there are so many ways to flavor your brew without the addition of obscene amounts of sugar.
So, be sure to give some of these options a try and let us know what you think!

FAQ
1- Why are some sugar-free syrups considered unhealthy?
Many sugar-free flavored syrups are sweetened with artificial sweeteners which have been known to cause digestive distress, disrupt gut health, and even increase sugar cravings.
These products also commonly contain emulsifiers and thickening agents, also known to cause similar concerns.
For this reason, many prefer sugar-free products which incorporate naturally calorie free sweeteners, such as stevia or monk fruit.
2- Are sugar-free flavorings safe for diabetics?
“Some studies show that certain sweeteners - especially sucralose and saccharin - may cause minor insulin responses in some individuals when consumed frequently or with carbohydrates.”
But, most folks report no significant spikes in insulin when consuming these products.
If you have any concerns, you can always opt for the natural, calorie-free, sugar-free items detailed in the above article.
