Coffee evokes a feeling.
You know what I’m talking about…
...from the aromas that beckon your body to leave the comfort of your warm bed when someone else in the house is brewing a cup in the wee hours of the morning.
...to the warm feelings of family, friendship, and unity that accompany a cup (or several) shared around those you love.
Just the mention of coffee can bring up some of these familiar and welcomed thoughts.
But, let’s move past those thoughts and consider all of the senses associated with that cup.
Picture a latte. Unlike a usual cup of coffee, it stands out with its velvety foam that sits on top like a cloud. And, that cloud of foam evokes thoughts of an experience that is a step above ordinary.
And, this isn’t reserved for hot coffees alone. Foam has made it into the chilled coffee world now as well.
Whether cold or hot, a cloud of foam sitting on top of your favorite brew ignites your senses, beckoning you to indulge.
You first see the fluffy cloud-like foam. Your eyes send a message to your brain...your interest is piqued.
Perhaps you touch the foam with the tip of your finger, feeling the smooth cloud on the tip.
You taste the foam from your fingertip, and it beckons you to bring the cup to your lips.
As you bring the warm or cold cup up to your mouth to sip, your sense of smell kicks in.
You take in the scent of the subtle sweetness of the milk, perhaps a spicy aroma from the addition of cinnamon, maybe a calming scent of vanilla, and of course the familiar aroma of coffee, slightly veiled by the foam, then comes from underneath.
You sip...and the rest is history, because you’re hooked!
The addition of foam to either a hot or cold cup of coffee can enhance your brew, elevating it to levels you’d not previously thought possible.
Why is it that this velvety cloud sitting atop our coffee can be so visually stimulating?
Well, let’s face it, we live in a looks-based society. We care about what things look like. From our homes, to our vehicles, to our clothing...and, especially what we consume.
While sight isn’t necessarily a part of your sense of taste, it affects how your body perceives that item. So, when your food or drink looks appealing, your taste buds are intrigued.
In fact, our sense of sight is so important to how we perceive food, it’s why folks go to unusual lengths when photographing foods.
Did you know that glue is used in place of milk in cereal ads? The bright white color and the thick consistency of the glue provides a pleasing sight to your senses, making the bowl of crunchy cereal more desirable.
Toothpicks and even cardboard are used to produce photos of seemingly mile-high burgers. And, those same burgers are brushed with vegetable oil to give a “juicy” look to the meat.
Glue in cereal, cardboard and vegetable oil on a burger...sounds absurd, right? I mean, that’s not making my mouth water at all. So, why do they do it? Aesthetics!
Velvety, thick foam sitting on top of a cup of hot or iced coffee evokes this exact kind of intrigue we’re speaking of.
A latte? Technically this is just a cup of coffee with some form of milk steamed and added to the brew. So, why not just pour some milk into the mug and carry on?
While some insist that the milk tastes a bit sweeter when steamed, overall, it’s the boosted aesthetics for the win here!
But, it doesn’t stop there! Velvety, thick, beautiful foam doesn’t just have to be for your viewing pleasure. You can actually transform the flavor of your entire cup of coffee through the foam that rests on top.
When you add milk to your coffee, whether dairy (like skim or whole milks), non dairy (like almond or oat milk), or even heavy cream, you are adding fat to your brew.
Even small amounts of fat added to your coffee change its texture and take the edge off of the bitterness that often accompanies it.
When topping your coffee with foam, depending on your choice of milk, you get the varying amounts of fat added to create texture and soften bitterness, but you’re also creating a base with which you can transform the taste of your coffee.
That’s right, the foam sitting atop your iced or hot coffee is truly a doorway to flavor!
With a frother, your preferred choice of milk, a few extra ingredients, and some creativity, the possibilities are practically endless.
Follow me on a foam journey, if you will.
Picture it. Sicily, 1912. ...or, maybe it’s just America, autumn of 2020 ?
You pour your hot cup of freshly brewed Lifeboost light roast coffee OR reach inside of your refrigerator for your carafe of cold brewed Lifeboost Pumpkin Spice Coffee.
Either way, you pour your preferred brew into your mug or glass. And, now the fun begins.
Think fall. Think spice. Be creative.
Maybe you add a little maple syrup to your coffee for a touch of sweetness? Now a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
You plug in your frother and add some heavy cream, or maybe almond milk for a dairy free option. But, you don’t have to stop there. Add a teaspoon of pumpkin puree and some ground cloves to the frother as well.
Maybe you want a little more sweetness, so you add a bit of maple syrup to the frother too.
Then, you froth. You can choose a cold setting for topping your cold brew or a hot setting for your freshly brewed coffee. And, when it's finished frothing, you pour this velvety foam creation atop your coffee and admire your work.
Now, you're sipping your coffee through a network of creamy, velvety, flavor-filled goodness.
Every sip is enhanced. Every time your cup touches your lips, it’s greeted with a mixture of decadent flavors. Your coffee must pass through this layer to enter your mouth, ensuring each sip is bathed in the foam’s unique combination of ingredients.
Maybe you’re not the creative type when it comes to your cup of joe? Maybe you’re sitting here thinking...come on now, I need measurements! I need exacts! I need a recipe!
Ask, and you shall receive! Here’s a recipe (one of my favorites, might I add) with some exact measurements resulting in a fall treat that frankly...should make it onto a menu board somewhere! I call it,
The Great Pumpkin. ...you’re welcome!
And, if pumpkin is just not your thing, don’t fret. As we mentioned earlier, the possibilities of flavor transformation are truly endless when adding a foam topper to your brew.
Maybe you prefer chocolate or caramel flavoring?
Maybe you’re looking for a full blown dessert type of treat?
Or, maybe you’d like to multiply the health benefits of your brew with a healthy topper?
You can do any and all of that when adding foam to your coffee. (Hint, stick around for an opportunity to open a treasure chest of recipes to transform your daily cup of joe that may just turn you into a full blown foam addict!)
But, before that treasure chest opportunity, let’s look at how you can use foam to multiply the already plenteous health benefits of your coffee.
